Take Outs for 15/16 April 2004

Great, it is Summer already.

Here it is, merely 16 April and its reaching 90+ degrees here in Omaha. What happended to my beloved Spring days of highs in the 70s, lows in 50s? Ugh.

On a positive note, I'm super impressed with all of the feedback people have been offering on "Build the database first, or the application first?" Yes, I will get around to writing more about this. I think posting it on Channel9 helped get more responses, which I also find interesting.

The clock is ticking so I'm going to be pushing really hard on my InfoTec presentation. Looks like a lot of my co-workers are planning on showing up. Hum, I wonder how they will like BeerTracker.

MVP Summit Views and Issues with Threaded Discussions Blogging More stuff to think about for building a better BlogTrap.
Don't Subsidize the Surveillance State! Blogging Ugh. I've never been much of one for saying "enough of this police state" thanks to the FUD 9/11 generated, but really does seem pointless to me.
Vanity License Plates Blogging But, to date, the best vanity license plate I’ve ever seen, by far, was on a VW beetle. It read, “FEATURE.”
I've started up a Blog for Frequently Asked Questions about VB.NET Dev The world needs more FAQ&As
Making web forms easy with InfoPath and "InfoView" Dev Looks very interesting, actually.
.NET Citizenship for DataTable Dev Read the comments too. Scott make points out something that's kind of bugged me for a while.
Writing Code On Whiteboards Is Hard Dev Tell me about it! I've had to do this countless times in meetings, too.
Why doesnt' Seventeen Magazine write about Women in Tech Dev Julia, its your clarion call. Take up the cause and propose doing a feature series for them.
Generating RSS Feeds for SharePoint Sites Dev I've been looking for this.
Quick IL Reference Dev Now that is handy
Turning HTML Documents into images...the code Dev So is this! Thanks Scott!
Required to Write Articles? Dev I hate companies that do that because writing should come from self-motivation and desire to share and communicate. Forcing people to write makes the effort work, which makes it "fun" to "avoid doing/" Yeah, its great for the company and I'd love land a full-time technical writing gig, but making it part of the average IT professionals job strikes me as demotivating.
Perls of Wisdom Otherwise Why on earth is O'Reily NOT publishing this and the Perl Patterns book?
"Why women in technology remain invisible" Otherwise I agree, I'd love to see more Women in IT for a lot of reasons, a big one being that they think about things much differently than men do.
Securitydocs.com: The Information security library for the infosec pro Otherwise Bookmarked.
Open Source vs. Closed Source Security Otherwise ...It doesn't matter if code is open or closed from a code audit perspective. So many OSS fans refuse to accept this,..
Quote on Failure Otherwise Unenjoyable success isn't very motivating either.
Security Enhancements for Remote Access at Microsoft Otherwise Tucking this one away since I'm likely going to have to work on a project like this soon.
BizTalk 2004 Tutorial (finally!) Otherwise Definitely worth checking out.
O'Reilly Research on State of Computer Book Market Otherwise Maybe I need to switch gears and start thinking about writing application-specific stuff.
Have you thanked a soldier lately? Otherwise No reasons to put the shields up, Jeff, it is a great idea and thing to do. Please post any of the photos you get from them if you can. And thank you for the nudge.
Unwired in Omaha Otherwise Omaha is the 38th most unwired city? Wow! That's a great thing for my presentation! Thanks Matt and Matt!
Report Designer for Visual Studio 2005 SQL It would be great to have a set of designers-as-controls that we could embed in our applications.
Nested Groups SQL Any others having these issues?
Misunderstanding timestamp SQL Good post, but I loved this comment from Marc LeFleur: They seem simple if you have been pulling DBA duty for years, but for the occasional DBA they can lead to spaghetti faster than an Italian chef on meth.
Tim Anderson's interview on SQL Server Yukon: Some clarifications WILY Okay, so the big point here for me is, unlike what I though and said in the past, XML type is not based on the CLR at all. Fine, and now that Michael has pointed out how they did this internally, it makes sense that its not. I really like the fact that I can mix my XML and relational data with XQuery in Yukon.
Sql Server Yukon book proposal WILY I left a long comment on the blog about this, but I'd love to hear your ideas too.
Michael Rys Clarifies Xml in Yukon WILY I think this confirms some of my ideas about how XML will be stored in Yukon. SQL Server's strength is relational data, so it makes sense to make use of that strength when it comes to XML. Yep, same for me.
More on XML in SQL Server 2005 (Yukon) WILY Link to the article that started all of this hub-bub for me.
Yukon - Cures World Hunger WILY Lou makes some really good points, but I really like this one: So the XML datatype in Yukon, which is awesome, is one tool in the toolkit, but in my mind does not reduce or eliminate the need for middle-tier applications to do their fair share of the heavy lifting.

As always: your feedback is welcome below as a comment.
