Stuff a Nebraskan Notices about New York City

So I'm back from my overnight trip to New York City. Its the first time I've actually been into the city proper. Basically it seemed just about like any other huge city to me, but there were some things that really stood out.

  • LaGuardia is a nice little airport that's easy to get around in. The New York Airport Service bus seems to be the best way to get to the Grand Central Station from there (and back).
  • Along the way both to and from the airport, I couldn't help but notice the Grave Yards and how even they seemed very crowded.
  • Generally the people were more polite than I expected even considering that I was essentially in the touristy part of town. Maybe it was the New Year effect.
  • Cellular signal strength on the 34th floor of a hotel is really bad.
  • Traffic signs stating "Do not honk horn unless there is danger" seems a little redundant.
  • There's an okay Japanesse restuarant 38th and probably 3rd called Hana. Had their Oyako Don which was fine, but they didn't seem to have a clue as how to make Inari. Its not maki-sushi, the rice is stuffed in, OK.

Anyway, what was particuarily cool for me was that my long-time virtual pal Hilary Cotter (MVP, Replication and FTS Guru), and Don ("DonXML", MVP XML) and Melissa (SQLDiva) Demsak came up from Jersey to have dinner with me. I sort of felt bad of anybody else in the restuarant as our conversation very quickly turned very geeky.

Pictures of the geeks to follow...
