Local Events (Omaha) Events of interest for February 2005
Looks like its going to be a busy month for the IT Communities in the Greater Omaha area:
  1. First up is OLUG's monthly meeting on the 1st. The topic of discussion? Asterisk!
  2. Omaha SPIN should be having a meeting on the 15th, but I've not heard a topic yet.
  3. NebraskaCERT CyberSecurityForum will be meeting on the 16th for breakfast and a general disucssion of Security Trends.
  4. Bummer! The Omaha Macromedia group is having the renowned Kevin Towes come speak about Flash Communication Server on the 17th. Not that this is a bad thing but...
  5. Also on the 17th, the Greater Omaha SQL Server's Users Group will be meeting. Group Co-Founder and SQL Guru Luke Schollmeyer will be talking about the T-SQL enhancements in SQL Server 2005.
  6. Monday the 21st, the Omaha Java User's Group will having a presentation by Dave Burchell about the PayPal API.
  7. Thursday the 24th is a .NET-DoubleStack. In the afternoon Mike Benkovich will be visiting town to present the quarterly MSDN event. Following that, FunWith.NET should be meeting at Creighton West. This session will be a bit different -- it's show and tell night!
  8. Bummer! That's the same night that the Omaha PerlMongers meet up.

InfoTec 2005: I'll Be There!

Just heard from the conference organizers that my session on SQL Server 2005 XML and CLR features has been approved for the Midwest's leading IT Conference -- InfoTec 2005 at the Qwest Center in Omaha. I'll be speaking at 10:30 on Wednesday, 6 April.

Here's the session description:

Pushing the Envelope: XML and CLR in SQL Server 2005

You've probably heard alot about Microsoft's SQL Server 2005 product offering, but what's hype and what's real? In this session, we will look at the how the nature of data and applications has driven changes in SQL Server 2005 and how you can take advantage of them. We will exploring using XML as a data type as well as using the .NET runtime within SQL Server.

My Crazy Friend Hilary Went and Did It...

...a Web cast, that is. See, aside from being one the nicest guys on the planet, Hilary Cotter knows SQL Server Replication. He knows it so well that's he's written a Four-Pound book on topic. And now, he's doing a Web Cast to boot.

While I can honestly say that this is a must watch for everybody, if you're even a little bit curious about what you can do with SQL Server replication, this is a great place to learn more.

Regularly Expressing IIS Log Files Part Deux

The other day I blogged a RegEx for identifying IIS5 log file lines and promised one for IIS6. Here you go...

Yo Microsoft, Webcasts are Cool but...

It worked so well last time that I though I'd take another run with it...

Yo Microsoft, Webcasts are Cool but... how about making available as "real" downloads instead of streams? You see, I travel alot, so it just rock to download these files to disk and watch them -- quite literally -- on the fly. Heck, I'd gladly settle for just the audio part. Then I could listen on the way to/from work, too.

Can LiveComm do that?

RIP Little Red: 2000-2005

The insurance company called tonight and told me they decided to total out my Echo. I'm going to miss it. Fun to drive 360 days of the year. I won't talk about the other five -- those days when we have 12"+ of snow overnight that burried the little booger so bad that it couldn't get out.

So, any suggestions as to what to look for next? I'm thinking about RAV or something like that. Would really like something with All-Wheel Drive, I think.

And for those of you who are Husker fans thinking I knew something about UNL's "Least Adorable Mascot But Most Inflatable Mascot Ever" -- sorry. May he'll get run out of town with Coach "Running Backs are just extra Blockers" Callahan and AD Steve "Loosing Makes Us Better" Pederson.
