August 2005 - Posts

I went ot Channel 9 yesterday and found a new look.  It is much improved over the old look and has all of the videos tagged to find things easier.  The SQL Server area has 2 videos featuring Jim Gray.  I thought that I might take a quick look at it and found myself totally engrossed in the subject.  Great Interview!!!  Check it out at http://channel9.msdn.com.

This morning, I got an e-mail from Jean-Rene' of DevTeach.  It was the final report on the event.  There were 305 attendees showing another 20% growth from the previous years attendance.  The report that was issued had the top 10 speakers in eachof the tracks and also overall.  I feel honored to be in the top 10 SQL Server Track speakers for the event.  There was no details yet about next year's event, but check out www.devteach.com to check it out.  It was a good event and I hope to be a part of it next year.

Some of the other speakers not on the list included Rushabh Metha, Adam Machanic, Robert Hurlbut, and John Kane.  Each of these guys had some great sessions.

I have included the Top 10 Overall Speakers and SQL Server speakers below.  Bill Vaughn and Peter Debetta were two from the SQL Server track that made it in to the top 10 overall.  Congrats!

If you are in the Winston-Salem, High Point, Greensboro area tongiht, come to the August meeting of the Triad SQL Server User Group where I will be presenting a session on Engine Enhancements in SQL Server 2005.  Visit www.TriadSQL.com for more information and directions.

I did my usual stop at Channel 9 today and found a clip from Michael Rys talking about XML in SQL Server.

If you don't know what Channel 9 is, follow this link.

A couple of weeks ago when I was in Portland, one of the attendees asked a question about mirroring that I had not heard before.  I thought about it for a few seconds and my gut was correct, but I needed to check it out.  Here is the Question....

"If Server A (the Principal) has two databases on it that are being mirrored to Server B (the Mirror) and these two databases are tightly coupled (one has some SPs that reference objects in the othe db), and one of the databases fails over, but the other does not, what happens?"

"The short answer is that it breaks" - However there is someting that can be done.   When a database fails over, it fires an event that may be captured and coded to make the other one failover too.  I spoke with a trusted friend about this and they had actually coded this for a customer.  So it does break, but it can be worked around.

I enjoyed seeing everyone at the Road Shows last week in Portland and Seattle.  There will be a flurry of these shows over the next 7 weeks leading up to the PASS Community Summit on September 27.  Visit www.sqlpass.org for more details.
